A rare and iconic piece of mid-century Danish design, this 1960s “Lotus” dining table by Dyrlund Møbler is an engineering marvel crafted in luxurious Brazilian rosewood. Designed in the mid-20th century and named for its elegant, petal-like extensions, it stands as a striking example of sculptural functionality and master craftsmanship. The table is constructed from highly figured Brazilian rosewood, prized for its deep, swirling grain and rich tonal variation. The round top rests on four solid, tapered legs, offering both visual lightness and structural stability. What truly sets this table apart is its ingenious self-storing extension mechanism. Hidden beneath the top are eight curved leaves, or “flaps,” each joined with brass hinges that provide both strength and refined detailing. To expand the table, the main top slides open to reveal the folded flaps within. Each flap unfolds and flips into place, locking seamlessly to create a larger, elegant round surface. The system is fully integrated with no additional parts or external storage needed. Comfortably seating six to eight people, this is a rare collector’s item and a functional sculpture, living art that beautifully embodies the innovation, elegance and enduring appeal of Danish modern design. Soon to be treasured in an Australian home and enjoyed for generations to come. Mint condition, beautifully restored. The table extends from 120 cm in diameter to 175 cm when fully opened.
